At Builders Depot Direct we have been fortunate enough to be in a position to support our customers with this growing trend. It is not just the Carrara Venato 1x2" Herringbone Mosaic $10.95SF but the Carrara Subway Tile $7.00SF and even more surprisingly the 6x12" larger format Subway Tile that is being increasingly installed in a Herringbone format.

Atlanta (June18th 2010) Twitter is a service that allows (friends, family, etc to stay in touch) in our case Builders Depot Direct to send instant messages to customers staying in touch with regards to new products, inventory, shipping times, etc. Twitter allows us to send message up to 140 characters called "Tweets".

Builders Depot Direct as of June 18th 2010 has 2,836 followers, we are proud of this number as we have made little effort in creating or setting any targets for customers to follow us.

We have put this together to help – our goal is to sell the highest quality Building Materials & Home Improvement products at the lowest possible price.

‘Selling the Highest Quality Building & Home Improvement Products at the Lowest Possible Price’

This sounds easy enough but let’s examine this in the market place Builders Depot Direct competes in. I hope this helps our customers and potential customers understand more about our business and the costs we have eliminated.

First lets look at the traditional method of buying buildings materials (also includes home improvement & remodeling products).

The Home Center: (Lowes, Home Depot, etc) the home center buys products directly from manufacturers, they store the products in there DC’s (Distribution Centers – not efficient) and then ship out to their store.

Home centers offer confidence and choice. They have also built up enormous costs, the huge stores, internal logistics operations, tens of thousands of employee costs, CEO cost in the $100m+ - overpaid executives, private jets – they also have to make huge profits to report to Wall Street.

This all takes it’s toll on the products they sell – take a piece of tile: cost from manufacturer $4.00SF – add to that the private jets, vacations, corporate offices, functions, million dollar bonuses, huge stores, lighting, heating, air conditioning, etc, etc. That tile has to have all that cost built into it and then a profit on top. $4.00SF soon becomes $14.00SF.

You the consumer pay for all the costs; send the CEO a nice Christmas bonus and then you make the shareholders a profit as well.

The Retailer: (Local retail store/small chain). The retailers buy from a distributor, the distributor buys from a manufacturer. This is not very cost effective as the poor retailer buys from a distributor who has to make 20% margin and the manufacturer sells to the distributor.

The retailer has some of the similar cost issues that the Home Center has – fixed overhead, heating, air conditioning, utility costs, employee costs, etc, etc.

The retailer does offer local service, more than likely better product knowledge and that small town – ‘one on one’ customer service feel. However as with the Home Center there is a cost. Take the $4.00SF tile, the manufacturer sells to the distributor – the distributor adds his margin and then sells onto the poor retailer.

The sites are a work of art, pictures beautifully laid out – testimonials that seem to go on forever, customer service that can anticipate your very next question. They have taken on the Traditional Home Center, built mini empires, quoted change and building material revolution until every venture capitalist is knocking at their doors.

They make the Internet Top 500 retailers and their sales can be $50m+. However, lets again take the $4.00 tile. History of Laminate Flooring

LAMINATE FLOORING HISTROY
Laminate flooring represents the most significant flooring entry in the past twenty-five years.

The product we know today as laminate flooring was originally developed as another possible use of high-pressure melamine laminate. This occurred in Sweden in the early eighties. A product was created with a base of several layers of paper impregnated with special resins which were pressed together under high pressure into a highly wear resistant composite material. The decorative paper determined the design. The finished laminate was then glued onto a carrier and cut into sections with extremely exact dimensions.

Decorative laminate was a product that was widely used on kitchen countertops, tables or wall paneling, but obviously not as yet for floors. This clearly created an opportunity, but a flooring application brought new technical challenges. The initial concern to be solved was the wear factor. It is obvious that floors are walked on and therefore suffer a lot more normal abuse than furniture or counter tops. A laminate floor clearly had to be more durable. A reinforced laminate that was approximately ten times stronger than counter tops was created and the first flooring began to be sold. As research grew, the relative strength of flooring laminate increased dramatically to at least twenty times that of countertops.

Important parallel developments were also taking place during these early days. Packaging was one. Wood flooring at the time was normally sold in long strips of approximately eight feet and installed only by a skilled professional. Laminate flooring was different right from the beginning. It was packaged eight planks to a carton that was approximately half this length (about four feet). The easy to handle carton was fairly lightweight and could be transported by car or in an elevator with ease. Its carton contents equaled approximately twenty square feet (two square meters). Because of these revolutionary factors and ease of installation, a large do-it yourself market was created in Sweden that exists today. In fact, over ninety percent of laminate flooring in Sweden still is self-installed!

REASONS FOR ACCEPTANCE
The system of gluing, using a tongue and groove method that, when done properly, creates a single unit that is impervious to normal household spills or tracked in rain or snow. This single unit expands or contracts with changes in humidity. (This movement, by the way, cannot be seen). The strength of the bond in creating the single unit permits heavy objects, such as refrigerators or bookcases to be placed directly on the flooring.

Provided that the glue is applied correctly, there is no problem with gaping. This process of installation is called a floating floor. The laminate floor can be laid or "floated" over the existing floor without being glued to the surface. This system also encapsulates the original floor. In most cases, (with the exception of textile), the older floor is not removed. This further saves time and installation costs!

Both the professional installer and the do-it-yourself customer quickly embraced the floating floor method because of the simplicity of installation and removal as compared to a glue down (to the sub-floor) floor. An easy removal process replaces the laminate floor at which point it can be destroyed with no danger to the atmosphere. Laminate floors contained insignificant quantities of elements that affected indoor air quality, plus it could be installed in a minimum amount of time.

The final success ingredient (and an important one) is in the aesthetics of the floor. In the beginning virtually all the floors replicated were wood species. Why? Simply because these patterns were desired by the public. As laminate flooring grew in popularity, other looks were introduced, including marble and stone. One of the interesting aspects of laminate flooring is that the designs are limited only by the imagination of the producers. This has resulted in a product that is now recognized by the design and decorating community for its ability to create an atmosphere of great beauty along with durability.

THE EUROPEAN SPREAD OF LAMINATE FLOORING
Three important attributes - durability, design and installation ease now assured the popularity of laminate flooring in Europe. Following the early success in Scandinavia, other northern European countries, primarily Germany and the Benelux countries began to market laminate flooring. Distribution then spread quickly throughout the rest of Europe and continues today.

Standards in Europe are being created by the CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation or The European Committee for Standardization) group and will have the force of law. NALFA maintains a relationship with this important committee as well as EPLF (European Producers of Laminate Flooring). The interchange of ideas and technical data is viewed by NALFA as one of the most important areas of contribution.

INTO NORTH AMERICA
Laminate flooring crossed the Atlantic to North America in the early nineties and was brought quickly to the market. The results of this introduction surpassed even Europe.

The North American consumer discovered that she could have a product of beauty with incredible wear and unmatched stain resistance. American and Canadian kitchens quickly became the primary room for laminate floors. Our consumer found out that virtually nothing could stain this beautiful floor, nor would sun or ultraviolet cause fade; and wear patterns were a thing of the past. And yet there were more discovered benefits. The resistance to indentation from heavy objects or shoes was far greater than popular existing wood or vinyl floors. CARE AND CLEANING OF INTERIOR MARBLE
The best way to maintain the appearance of any marble, granite, or limestone surface is to wash it frequently and to immediately rinse off any spilled materials. Natural stone can be cleaned periodically with a non-fat, mild detergent (such as Windex) or lukewarm water, and then rinsed thoroughly. Murphy's Oil Soap can also be used but might darken the stone somewhat.

DO NOT USE TILE-X or other abrasive cleaners on your natural stone, as this can result in scratches and dull areas.

The best defense against stains is prevention. However, stains do occur and can most often be removed with a poultice. A poultice is made with powdered whiting and hydrogen peroxide. Whiting is sold in most paint stores. The poultice should be applied as described below for each particular type of stain.

The most problematic staining materials are as follows: oils, mayonnaise, butter, wine, and meat.

Sealers should be used for floors or counters. We recommend that a silicone-based sealer be applied at least twice a year. You may find that you will need to do so more frequently. When you notice that water is no longer beading and dark spots begin to occur, it is time to reseal. Your stone from Carrera was sealed twice: once after fabrication, and once after installation. This treatment should suffice for at least six months. As a rule, we recommend that you seal the counters two to three times a year. Quarts of sealer, good for approximately 200 square feet, are available through Carrera Marble.

Etch Marks:
Many substances will not only discolor marble and granite but will etch the surface. Lemon juice, soft drinks, wine, and other acidic substances can all cause etch marks. Etching of marble can be corrected, but we suggest that this only be done by a professional.

Organic Stains:
Organic stains are caused by tea, coffee, soft drinks and fruit juices. If the counter is properly sealed (see above), stains from these elements can be reduced.

Organic stains can be removed by applying the following:
1. Mix a poultice consisting of powdered whiting (sold in most paint stores) and 20% hydrogen peroxide (hair bleach) to form a thick paste.

2. Apply a ½" thick layer of this mixture over the stain.

3. To keep the poultice from drying too rapidly, cover the poultice with a piece of plastic kitchen wrap, held in place with masking tape.

4. Leave this in place overnight--for very stubborn stains, you may need 48 hours.

5. If, after the first application, the stain is still noticeable, repeat the application, adding a few drops of household ammonia to the poultice mixture.

6. After the stain disappears, remove the application, rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

Oil Stains:
Oil stains are caused by such substances as butter, cream, milk, peanut butter, hand lotions, mustard and other fatty substances with greasy ingredients. These types of stains include olive oil. The stains are usually circular and are often darker in the centers. They are often quite difficult to remove because they tend to penetrate deeper than most other stains.

1. The first step is always to locate and remove the source of the stain.

2. Wash the surface with ammonia, and then rinse with plenty of clean, lukewarm water.

If the stain persists, continue with the following steps:

1. Make a poultice with acetone and whiting to form a thick paste.

2. Apply a ½" thick layer of this mixture over the stained area.

3. To keep the acetone from evaporating and the poultice from drying too rapidly, cover the poultice with a piece of plastic kitchen wrap, held in place with masking tape.

4. Leave the application in place overnight (stubborn stains may require 48 hours).

Rust Stains:
Rust stains are invariably caused by metallic objects in the presence of moisture. Rust stains are usually orange or brown in color. If these stains are noticed promptly, they can sometimes be removed simply by rubbing hard with a dry cloth, especially if the surface has been waxed. If the stain doesn't come off, proceed with the following treatment:

Make a poultice of a commercial liquid rust remover mixed with whiting to form a thick paste.
Apply a ½" thick layer of this mixture over the stained area.
Place a piece of plastic kitchen wrap over the mixture to secure it in place.
Leave the application in place overnight.
Remove the poultice mixture and rub the marble surface with a dry cloth.

Soot and Smoke:

1. Scrub the surface with a non-fat detergent (Windex) and a stiff fiber brush, and then rinse with clean water.

If this still leaves noticeable dirt and stains, continue with the following steps:

2. Make a poultice consisting of baking soda or some other alkaline cleaner, mixed with laundry bleach, to form a thick paste.

3. Spread on the stained surface to a thickness of about ½".

4. Cover with a damp cloth to keep the poultice damp.

5. Leave in place overnight.

6. Remove by wetting and or scraping with a wooden spatula, plywood, or stiff cardboard.
